How to Choose Paint Colors When You Can’t Visualize Them?

Hey everyone! I'm really stuck on picking paint colors for my home after a major renovation. We've been at it for 5 months on what was supposed to be a 2-month project and finally made it to the paint stage. The place was a rental for over 15 years, and we had to deal with a lot of issues, from popcorn ceilings to old, worn-out walls. We're going for warmer tones to complement our light honey oak cabinets and flooring, plus we want a nice white neutral throughout. I'm a fan of accent walls and plan on having those in the master bedroom and living room, with a different color for the office. However, I just can't wrap my head around these colors without seeing the furniture in place! I keep getting stuck between different whites and I'm really stressed out about making the wrong choice. Any tips on how to get past this creative block? Thanks!

Hey there, fellow aphantasia warrior! Finding a color you really like can be key. For instance, in my home office, I’ve got walnut furniture with a dark blue-gray for one wall and a sand color on the opposite wall. It creates a nice balance without needing to visualize the whole room. You might also want to try ChatGPT for ideas—it's been a game changer for me!

It's tough out here! Everyone around me is asking how I envision it and I'm like I seriously have no clue haha! I just downloaded ChatGPT after reading your suggestion, can't wait to try it out!

Definitely check out the Sherwin Williams app! It helps you find coordinating colors and make your choices easier. Also, visiting a local building store for sample colors and brochures could be super helpful. You're not alone in this, and it’s great that you're putting thought into it!

A solid approach is to pick a color palette you love and choose one color for the walls. Then you can select furniture and flooring that fit that palette, which saves you from having to visualize everything at once. For example, I picked a Moss accent wall and paired it with Smoked Taupe floors and planned furniture accordingly. This way, everything harmonizes without needing to see the finished look in your mind!

Wow, love that palette idea! This really reshapes how I’m thinking about it because imagining the end result is tough for me.
