Looking for Ideas to Build a Toilet Button Pusher

Hey everyone! I'm trying to create a device that allows someone to flush a toilet without having to stand up. The idea is to have an attachment that can push the button on a toilet's top from a seated position. I need it to have about half an inch of throw, but it seems like it requires a fair amount of strength to get the button pressed all the way down. I'm not sure if I'm picking the right components since the options on Amazon look either too flimsy or really heavy-duty. Any guidance would be fantastic!

Have you looked into linear actuators? They can be programmed with something like an Arduino to respond to button inputs and then push the flush button. Just keep in mind that decent linear actuators can get pricey, and you might have to test the speed of the pressing since some flush mechanisms might not work well with slow activation.

Isn't it true that good linear actuators can be quite expensive?

You might face issues with speed when pressing, depending on your toilet's system. Some rely on a siphon activated by a piston that doesn’t seal well, so a slow push could lead to leaks. I'd recommend testing it out manually before buying any hardware.

Have you thought about using a Bowden cable? You can easily 3D print a replacement for the flush button and a handheld trigger. An old bicycle brake handle could work as your trigger too! This setup wouldn't need any electricity, is pretty reliable, and is super affordable if you have access to a 3D printer or can build something similar.

Totally agree! This method would give you good force transfer and it's all mechanical—no electronics needed.

Not sure if this is what you need, but instead of pushing the button, you might want to think about a touchless button. You could attach an arm to a servo that swings over to activate it without any physical contact.
