I'm trying to cut my first dado using a router and a jig that I made myself. The problem is that I keep accidentally cutting into the jig itself while I'm working. Can anyone suggest what I might be doing wrong?

Have you considered sharing a picture of your jig? Seeing how it's built could help us diagnose the issue better. Are you using your router baseplate as a guide, or are you trying out a different method like a bushing or top-bearing bit? That could also make a difference!
I had a similar issue when I started out. Usually, the best approach is to take smaller cuts instead of going for a deep cut all at once. This way, you can make several passes without risking cutting into your jig. It also helps avoid splintering.
It sounds like you might not have the jig set up correctly. It should be positioned against the router's baseplate, not the bit itself. If it's touching the router bit, you'll end up cutting it! Double-check your setup before you start cutting.
