I've got really jagged drywall edges around my window, and some of the gypsum is exposed because the original window casing covered it up. Now, I'm installing a narrower casing to fit with my cabinets, but it won't cover all the rough edges and deep cavities where the drywall doesn't align with the window edge. Is it okay to just fill those deep cavities with joint compound, or should I consider another solution?

Using joint compound alone isn’t the best move since it tends to shrink and takes a while to dry. I’d suggest you fill most of the cavity with backer rod or some spray foam first. Then, use hot mud (the type that sets in 20, 45, or 90 minutes) along with mesh tape to make it all sturdy. Once that's set up, finish it off with a thinner coat of joint compound. It'll give you a cleaner finish!

Is regular spray foam like Great Stuff good for that? Would it work well around the window?
