Has Anyone Built Their Own Garage Door?

I'm in a bit of a pickle with my storage space, as the opening size is pretty unconventional. I've searched high and low for a reasonably priced overhead garage door—whether it's a roll-up or a standard residential type—but no luck. So, I thought, why not take matters into my own hands? I'm considering buying all the necessary hardware and building custom panels myself. Being a contractor, I have the tools and the general skills to tackle this. Has anyone tried this before? I'd love to hear any tips or thoughts you might have!

I replaced a section of my garage door once that had rotted out, and it wasn't that bad! You’ll need a decent router and some specialized bits called "exterior door rail and stile bit sets". Since you're not matching existing doors, it's a lot easier to get creative. Plus, building it yourself can save a ton of cash and you can customize future doors however you like! Good luck with your project!

Would it be better to start with a plywood base and then customize the style on top with other boards?
