I'm considering buying all the necessary hardware and building custom panels myself. Being a contractor, I have the tools and the general skills to tackle this. Has anyone tried this before? I replaced a section of my garage door once that had rotted out, and it wasn't that bad! You’ll need a decent router and some specialized bits called "exterior door rail and stile bit sets". Since you're not matching existing doors, it's a lot easier to get creative. Plus, building it yourself can save a ton of cash and you can customize future doors however you like! Good luck with your project!
Would it be better to start with a plywood base and then customize the style on top with other boards?
