Hey everyone! We just moved into our first house and, while we're renting, we do have some flexibility. However, I'm struggling with sleep because the furnace is located on the second floor, and there's a vent right by our bedroom that's really loud. The noise is constant – even when the heat isn't on, there's this annoying whirring sound. My wife managed to get some rest, but I barely slept at all. I'm wondering if anyone has tips on how to cut down on this noise, even a little bit would help! Thanks!

That whirring could be more than just an annoying sound. It might indicate that something is off with the unit itself, like a loose part or even a malfunction. It’s smart to put in a maintenance request to your landlord to have it looked at. I had a similar experience, and once the furnace was tuned up, it made a world of difference. Plus, if they can stabilize the transitions, it might just blend into a more tolerable background noise instead of a startling one.
First off, you should definitely try to figure out what’s causing that whirring noise. Addressing the source is key! Besides contacting your landlord, you could also look into soundproofing options like adding some thick curtains or rugs in the bedroom to muffle the sound a bit more.
I totally get your pain! New places can definitely feel louder at first, but sometimes you just need to give it a few days. You might find that you'll get used to the sounds over time. And for the immediate fix, check if your thermostat has a fan setting. Switching it from "On" to "Auto" can help reduce the constant noise when the heat is off. But if it's still noisy, check with your landlord to see if they can send someone to check it out.

I tried that, but it's still running. Plus, we don’t have any ceiling fans for airflow, so it's a bit tricky.
