I've got a standard outlet setup with one plug on top and another below. Recently, I noticed that the top half of both outlets stopped working when I tried to turn on a device. The bottom halves are still functioning just fine. I've already flipped the breaker, but that didn't help. These outlets don't have reset buttons either, which is adding to the confusion. It's weird that only half would stop working like this. Could the recent power outage have caused it? What's going on?

Check if there's a switch that controls the upper half of the outlets. Sometimes, there's a tab connecting the two sides, and if it's broken, it could cause issues. It's kinda suspicious that both outlets are affected though, so you might want to post some pics of the wiring if you can.
It's possible that outlets can wear out over time, especially after around 20 years. Have you thought about calling in an electrician just to be safe? They can quickly check things over for you.
These might be half-hot outlets where a switch controls the top half while the bottom is always on. Try plugging something into the top half and then fiddle with the light switches in the room or nearby. Just because a switch seems off, it might still be connected in a way that affects your outlet.
