What are some traditional bitter Brussels sprouts varieties?

I've always been a fan of bitter Brussels sprouts, but I've noticed that the ones sold at supermarkets these days just don't have the same flavor. I'm reminiscing about the good old sprouts from back in the 80s. Can anyone recommend some varieties that have remained true to their roots over the years?

Check out www.vreeken.nl; they should have some interesting varieties that might suit your taste!

If you're looking for some old-school varieties, try the open-pollinated types like Catskill, Long Island Improved, Evesham Special, and Groninger. They pack a stronger, more bitter flavor compared to the modern hybrids. Also, letting them get nipped by frost can enhance their taste!

Thanks a lot! I'll try some of those 🙂

Southern Exposure Seed Exchange has the Catskill aka Long Island Improved. Got some sprouting now.
