Why does my garbage disposal keep tripping the breaker when it’s not even in use?

I'm dealing with a frustrating issue where my garbage disposal constantly trips the breaker, even when I'm not using it. It's a relatively new unit, only a few years old, and it seems to trip pretty much every day. I'm unsure if I should replace the disposal itself or if I need to get an electrician to check the wiring. Any advice on what might be causing this problem and what steps I should take first would be greatly appreciated!

Just to clarify, is the garbage disposal the only appliance on that circuit? Sometimes having multiple devices on the same breaker can lead to issues like this. If it’s just the disposal, then it’s likely a wiring issue. You might want to check whether it’s connected to an arc fault breaker too, but again, a pro should handle it if you're not sure.

If your garbage disposal is tripping the breaker even when it's sitting idle, it could mean there's a short circuit somewhere in the wiring. This definitely sounds like something you'd want an electrician to check out. It's not a typical issue for garbage disposals, so getting a professional opinion is the safest way to go!
