Tips for Finishing a Walnut Desk

Asked By CraftyCorgi92 On

I'm a new woodworker and have successfully crafted a few projects with inexpensive lumber. Now I'm stepping it up to build a desk from walnut, which my son really wants. I'm fine with the assembling part, but I'm a bit lost when it comes to finishing. What would be a durable finish for this walnut desktop? Any suggestions?

For finishing walnut, I've had good luck with water-based stains followed by a layer of polyurethane or beeswax for added protection. Lightly sand between coats, using a progression from coarse to fine grits—think 80 to 220. A tip I found helpful is to apply a thin layer of stain, wipe off any excess, and allow it to dry, lightly sanding in between layers. Tutorial videos from stain companies can be super helpful, too!

That makes sense! I’ve read that some people avoid staining walnut altogether because of its natural beauty. What do you think?
