I found my old DeWalt DC987 drill with its original 18V DC9096 XRP batteries, but none of them seem to charge anymore. I've considered whether I should pay someone to refurbish or replace the batteries, but I also have an upgraded 20V series drill with plenty of batteries. What's the best way forward? Should I refurbish or just look for an adapter to use my newer batteries?

DeWalt actually has an adapter for using 20V Max batteries with your 9096. I wouldn't recommend going for aftermarket replacements for those batteries; typically they don’t hold up as well. The adapter is a more reliable option.
Those DC9096 packs are tough, but eventually, the cells wear out. You can either rebuild them by replacing the NiCd cells inside (if you're handy and have a spot welder), buy some aftermarket batteries (which can be hit or miss), or upgrade to a lithium setup using an adapter—this option is more pricey upfront, but you’ll enjoy lighter and long-lasting power. I did the rebuild route initially, but switched to lithium later, and it was definitely worth it for the convenience! What are you inclined to do: keep it original or upgrade?
You should definitely check out the DCA1820 adapter! It allows you to use those 20V batteries with your 18V drill. I just ordered one from Amazon, and it should arrive tomorrow. It'll save you a lot of hassle since you’ll be able to use your current batteries with the older tool!

Thanks a bunch, I really had no idea this was possible!
