What’s the Best Straight Edge for Hand Planing Long Boards?

I'm planning to hand plane some 8-foot long boards for a tabletop and I'm not sure what the best straight edge would be. Should I use a string method, invest in a long piece of square aluminum tubing like I saw mentioned elsewhere, or maybe just use a very long level? I'm curious about what you all typically do.

Are you worried about jointing the edges or just facing them? It's good to clarify this before choosing your method!

I’m focusing on jointing the edges. I’m making a 3ft x 8ft table, so I need those joints to be tight.

What if you need to face joint them too? Any thoughts on that?
