How Can I Get Rid of English Ivy in My Backyard?

Asked By CuriousGardener93 On

I've got a serious English ivy problem in my backyard! The vines are thick, some reaching 6 inches and climbing up the trees. When we first moved in, I had no idea how harmful it could be, so I just mowed it down and pulled it off surfaces. Recently, I traced a vine and discovered an extensive root system around one of my trees. This has got me worried! I'm hoping there's a way to eradicate it, even if it takes a few years. Has anyone successfully done this? Any advice would really help me avoid a meltdown over it, haha!

If you count moving away, then I succeeded! But seriously, we had English ivy and kudzu covering our whole backyard, and we hired a goat rental service. They cleaned everything in just 24 hours! It's been six years now, and it's still clear!

Mowing it down constantly really works. Another tip is to plant mint afterward; it helps keep it at bay. Just make sure to use pots for the mint to keep it contained!

I can't say I've gotten rid of mine completely yet, but I believe it's absolutely doable. Just keep at it and stay persistent!

I haven't tackled mine yet, but I'm planning for next year. I'm thinking about using those little florist containers filled with herbicide, placing a piece of the vine in them. My hope is that it'll spread the herbicide throughout the plant. Might be better than just spraying everything randomly!

You can definitely get rid of English ivy! I had a bad case too, but I repeatedly mowed it during the summer, and it hasn't come back except for a few sprouts. My neighbor still battles with it, but I'm free now!

Thank you for giving me some hope!
