My wife and I are big wine enthusiasts and have been collecting bottles for years. I'm considering building a wine cellar by digging a hole in our basement, essentially creating another room under our backyard. I've seen this done in a home in France, but that house was much older and built of stone. Am I out of my mind to attempt this?

It sounds like a huge project! Basically, you're looking at digging a big hole, putting in a foundation, building walls, and sealing it to your house, then turning the top part into a lawn. If you think it's worth the cost and effort, go for it, but definitely ask a contractor for references and previous work. If you're going all-out, why not make the top an outdoor living area instead of just a yard?
Honestly, the success of this project really depends on your location—things like soil type and groundwater levels could complicate things. But it sure would be an awesome wine cellar!
Building a wine cellar like that sounds ambitious! Just be prepared for the costs—it can get pretty expensive and you might not get a good return on that investment. Instead of digging, you could just take a corner of your basement and make an insulated wine nook with a door. Plus, have you checked out large wine fridges? They come in units that can hold hundreds of bottles and you can take them with you if you ever move!
