What’s the Cost of a Bathroom Remodel?

Hey everyone! So, I'm dealing with a bit of a mess in my bathroom. The tiles on my tub wall have started falling off, and I realized that the previous owner basically glued them over the old shower surround. The floor isn't great either, and I suspect the subfloor could be a disaster waiting to happen. I'm trying to plan my next steps without breaking the bank.

I have two options in mind:
1. Rip everything out and do it the right way.
2. Do the first option but also reconfigure the layout since my toilet isn't up to code with its distance from the wall. My dad took a peek and thinks the plumbing setup might need some adjusting too.

I'm wondering what kind of budget I should expect if I stick with solid, basic materials. Any ballpark figures you guys can share?

Realistically, you could end up spending anywhere from $10,000 to $50,000 or even more, depending on where you live. Prices can vary significantly based on the quality of work required, with some areas seeing costs differ by as much as 300%! So make sure to get several quotes to compare.

In my experience, especially in a major city in Canada, you're looking at spending around $20,000 to $30,000 for a basic remodel of a three-piece bathroom. Some people might say you can do it for $4,000 if you tackle it yourself or around $7,000 if you hire help, but that's pretty unrealistic where I am because of local regulations and costs. Just remember, the total really depends on your location and the specifics of your build.

The tricky part with older homes is you never know what issues you might run into, especially if you go with option 2. Are the bathroom walls plaster and lath or drywall? If you're looking for a quick fix, consider getting some good fibreglass shower surrounds that you can find at places like Home Depot or Lowe's. They usually run around $500 and are pretty easy to install directly onto your studs.
