Hey folks! I'm pretty new to woodworking and I'm brainstorming a project. I'm looking to make a walking cane for a friend that has a built-in storage feature. Specifically, I want to create a 3-foot-long hollow wooden cylinder with around a 1-inch diameter. The cane doesn't have to be super strong since I plan to add some internal components to reinforce it, but it should withstand minor bumps without falling apart. My friend really loves antiques and has to use a mobility aid now. They once admired a vintage cane with drawers for medical supplies, so I aim to replicate that function without fully copying the style. Initially, I thought about using PVC pipe for it, but I find PVC too cheap-looking and would prefer to work with wood. Is this an achievable DIY project, and where should I begin?

Using thin steel pipe could be a way to go! You could veneer it for a more wood-like finish.
