I've got a Whirlpool washer that's been acting up lately. It keeps going out of balance and shakes like crazy during the wash cycle. I figured the springs were fine, but it turned out the bushing and hub needed replacements. I got myself the upgraded red bushing and a better metal hub, but when I took it apart, I noticed that the gearcase splines are pretty worn out on one side. I've already spent about $40 on the metal hub and $30 for the bushing. If I replace the gearcase, it'll cost me $200 in total, including shipping. Plus, I might need a new washplate at $37 since mine is all scratched up. So that brings the total repair cost to $324. Alternatively, I could just buy a new LG WT6105CW washer for $200 more, which would be $550. From my research, it seems like this new model doesn't have a plastic hub like the Whirlpool. Do you think putting in all that money into repairs will make the old washer last another 10 years? I'm also concerned that not having an agitator might lead to quicker wear even with the new parts. What do you guys recommend?

If your Whirlpool has been around for over 10 years, it might be time to seriously consider a replacement. Once your washer starts going bananas during wash cycles, it's usually a sign that more issues might be lurking. Also, repairs can be a gamble, and you’re dropping a lot on parts that may not guarantee a long lifespan. It’s worth pondering if you just want to keep sinking money into an old machine.

Totally get that! I’d love to see how long a repair lasts too, but shelling out almost half the cost of a new washer feels tough.
