I'm stuck with an outdated 80's kitchen and don't have the budget for a complete remodel. My wife wants to paint the existing glossy patterned tile counters white. We've already tried a primer, a few coats of white latex paint, and finished it with KBS Coatings DiamondFinish Clear Coat. Unfortunately, the result hasn't been great—it stains easily and chips, possibly because we didn't apply it evenly. I'm looking for better methods or alternatives that will work well for kitchen counters.

If you're looking for a less demanding method, you might consider using an epoxy kit designed for countertops. They can provide a more durable surface, and many of them come in various colors to match your kitchen's style. It's worth checking out as a simpler alternative!
It’s definitely possible to paint tile properly, but it'll need a lot more effort than typical DIY videos suggest. To do it right, you’d have to grind down the glossy surface of the tile to get a good base, prime it with a proper masonry primer, and then use urethane or alkyd enamel paint followed by a waterborne urethane clearcoat. Just keep in mind that it's a labor-intensive process!
Honestly, painting tile counters usually leads to trouble. It often chips and stains, especially with everyday use. You might want to rethink your approach. Consider either removing the tiles and going for something fresh or, if you're looking for a budget-friendly option, replacing them with new tile or even a butcher block. It'll be more durable in the long run!
