I'm dealing with a frustrating 4.5" gap behind my vanity, and I'm looking for affordable solutions since I'm renting this space. I want to make it look nicer without major renovations. Any ideas?

It sounds like you might want to avoid permanent solutions since you're renting. Have you checked if adding a removable backer board or something similar could fill that gap without damaging the vanity or wall? That way, you can easily remove it when the time comes to move out.

Why is there such a big gap? If it's caused by how the drywall was installed, maybe you could also consider trimming the cabinet, but I get that it might throw off the inside space. Just weigh your options if you're comfortable doing some minor work.

You could try using a PVC 1x6, cutting it to fit the gap, and securing it with brackets. It should hold up well without causing damage, plus it might help optimize some space. Just make sure it’s neatly done to avoid any mold issues like you had before!
