Do I Need Asbestos Removal Before Installing Ceiling Lights?

Asked By CuriousCat42 On

I recently discovered that my ceiling has about 1-2% asbestos content. Now, I'm planning to install ceiling light fixtures, but currently, there's nothing up there. Should I arrange for professional asbestos abatement before proceeding with the install, or can I simply tell the contractor to be careful? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Before you install those ceiling fixtures, think about whether you really need them. You could buy a nice floor lamp instead and save a ton on asbestos removal! Going the cheap route could leave you with carcinogenic dust, which is not a fun surprise to deal with later.

You actually need to have any work that disturbs asbestos-containing materials done by professionals. Even just drilling for a light, you'd need to have it properly abated. Proceeding with caution isn’t enough; it could lead to serious liability if something goes wrong, not to mention it could delay the whole project if someone reports it.

Honestly, it's best to get rid of any asbestos in your home. It might seem like a big expense now, but it can boost your home's resale value and, more importantly, keep you safe from health risks associated with asbestos exposure. It's worth it in the long run!

That sounds great, but do you know how much abatement typically costs?
