Can I use paint/primer mix as a topcoat on freshly primed drywall?

I recently bought two cans of paint/primer mix for my garage, but I learned that fresh drywall really needs to be primed properly. I've also gotten five gallons of standard primer and plan to double coat my garage. Is it okay to use the paint/primer mix as the final coat over this primed drywall? I just want to make sure there's nothing wrong with doing this, considering I've already bought the paint.

Using that mix will work! New drywall really absorbs paint like a sponge, especially if it's textured. If you've not painted much, keep that in mind while applying. Just be ready to use a little extra paint than you would on pre-painted walls!

I’d recommend ensuring a good seal for raw drywall. A PVA primer (like thinned white glue) is a good option. It holds moisture better and ensures a smooth finish. That being said, the paint/primer mix is still a paint first, which means it might not adhere as well as a proper primer. You’re doing the right thing by using a proper primer here!

Thanks for this info! Your comment really clarified my situation with the paint/primer mix.

You'll be fine using that paint/primer mix as your final coat! I've done a lot of drywall painting without a traditional primer. I usually grab those big buckets of basic white paint from places like Lowe's and then apply a good quality paint on top. The results look great!

But just to clarify, you’re treating that white as a primer instead. PVA primer drives up costs less than any quality paint, plus it would get you similar results.
