How Do I Connect My New Dishwasher to Power?

Hey everyone, I just bought an 18-inch dishwasher, but I've never installed one before. Since we had to go smaller, the fit is tight next to the sink. The garbage disposal wiring runs through the cabinet and then behind the wall where the dishwasher will be. I'm not sure if it's hardwired or if there's an outlet hiding back there. I need some guidance on how to power the dishwasher—what steps should I take? I'd love to know what tools and materials I need and how the setup works. I'm considering calling an electrician for help, but I'd like to understand the process first. Any advice would be awesome!

If your dishwasher doesn’t have a plug and there's no outlet for it, your best move is to call an electrician. They can help sort out the hardwiring for you and make sure everything's done safely.

From what you described, it sounds like your garbage disposal is hardwired. You will definitely need to have a plug installed for the dishwasher since there isn't an existing outlet. It's typically common to install one in the cabinet under the sink. You might also need to tee off the water supply for the new dishwasher and connect its drain to the garbage disposal. Best to get a pro in for this!

Local codes can vary on whether dishwashers should be hardwired or plug-in, so it's good to check that out. If it's okay to hardwire, you could potentially run a power drop from the garbage disposal switch, but that depends on your layout. If that’s tricky, consider dropping a line from a nearby outlet. Getting an electrician involved to at least give you a quote could really simplify things!
