Hey everyone! I just tore out the carpet on my basement stairs, and honestly, I'm super new to any kind of remodeling or home improvement. There's some damage underneath, so I'm thinking about covering them with peel-and-stick wallpaper and then adding a decorative varnish, plus some stair grip tape for safety. However, I'm also considering filling in any cracks first so the wallpaper lays flat. I'm really hoping to avoid any major renovations since I'm tight on time and budget. I'm just looking to make the stairs easier to clean and less of an eyesore than the old shaggy rug from the '70s. I would love any suggestions! Thanks a ton!

I’d be cautious about using peel-and-stick wallpaper on the steps. It might wear down fast and could be slippery. If you're looking for a budget-friendly option, why not try some durable paint designed for floors? For a little fancier, they have wood treads that you can cut to size and glue down, which could really upgrade the look without too much hassle.

That makes sense! I thought the varnish and grip tape would help with the slipperiness, but maybe I should rethink the wallpaper. Do you think I could fill the cracks with something before painting?
