I'm trying to create a light and airy soil mix for my container plants without purchasing additional ingredients. I've got plenty of 'black gold' — really broken down organic matter that's quite dense, almost like playdough. I also have sand, wood chips, and palm tree mulch on hand. Will this be enough to work with, or do I inevitably need to buy something like perlite or coco coir?

Honestly, perlite is ideal for making soil lighter, but you should be able to get by with sand and wood chips. They can help create some air pockets. Just remember that you'll need a good balance to prevent compaction.

Would equal parts of everything work well then?
