How Should I Handle Billing Disputes with My Plumber?

I'm dealing with some frustrating issues involving a plumber who was hired to install a 1" irrigation meter. From the start, I mentioned there was an abandoned meter pit and a live 3/4" line on my property, but communication has been lacking. They were delayed and then showed up unannounced, which was tough since I have a job. After digging, they couldn't locate the main line and assumed it might be under the sidewalk without tracing the copper line they had exposed. Now, they have cut into the sidewalk, and after some back and forth, it turns out the main is actually across the street. I'm worried I'm going to be left with unexpected costs for mistakes that could have been avoided. If they present a plan moving forward, what's a fair way to handle billing? And if they decide to walk away without payment, should I just cut my losses and find someone else? How do I fairly share the responsibility for what's gone wrong here? I'm not trying to be difficult, but I can't afford to cover their mistakes entirely. Any advice would be great!

First off, make sure you check if you have a signed contract or any change orders from when the work started. If you only have a formal quote, that might guide how you approach the billings. If they try to charge you for the sidewalk cut and permits, push back on those costs since they didn’t follow through correctly initially. You could offer to cover a part of the labor for what they've done but exclude the costs for mistakes. If they want to walk away and not charge you, it might be a good idea to start anew with a different contractor who has better communication and a clearer plan. Your time and money are valuable too!

Definitely agree! And remember to document everything that’s been done so far. If you need to take further action, having a record will help. Communication is key with contractors, and it sounds like you haven't been receiving that.
