Is Buying Wood from Etsy a Good Idea?

Hey folks! I'm on the hunt for some wood for a project, but I'm having trouble finding what I need in my local stores. So, I decided to check out Etsy and found some really affordable options with solid reviews, like Aikewell Workshop. However, I'm a bit skeptical about the reliability of these deals and whether there might be scams involved. Has anyone here bought wood online from Etsy or similar budget-friendly sites, especially if you're based in Europe? I'd love to hear your experiences and recommendations! Thanks!

Honestly, I'd be cautious about buying wood from Etsy. You could check out reputable suppliers like Rockler or local lumber yards, as they usually have a better selection and quality. While Etsy might have some good deals, local sawmills often offer a variety of options you can actually see before purchasing. Plus, the staff at lumber yards can provide great insights about what you're looking for. If you want, try searching 'hardwood supply' or 'lumber yard' in your area to find something near you!

Thanks for the suggestions! Just to clarify, I checked my local sawmill, but they only have pine, and I need something different.

I've considered buying wood from sites like Etsy too, especially since cost can be a factor. If you're going to start, make sure to choose well-reviewed shops. Based on my experience, Rockler tends to be overpriced, and local lumberyards usually have more basic construction grade lumber. Just experiment a bit and see what works for you! Good luck!

You might want to reconsider those prices on Etsy. I checked one of the listings for black walnut, and while it looks good, it’s priced around $120 per board foot, which is quite steep compared to my local dealer's ~$10 per board foot. Make sure you double-check measurements, as they can be misleading!

Yeah, those prices do seem high for what you're getting, especially in Europe!

I've had some luck with sites like Bellforestproducts.com and Rarewoodsusa.com when sourcing wood. Just be careful with the pricing because what seems cheap might not be! I bought some walnut pieces from Etsy once because the price was right and the reviews were solid, but the seller ended up closing shop soon after. So, there's a bit of a gamble involved!
