What’s the Best Way to Grow Potatoes: In the Ground, Raised Beds, or Buckets?

I'm trying to figure out the best method for growing potatoes in my garden. My soil is really heavy clay, and while I have 6 deep raised beds (one of which I successfully used for sweet potatoes), they'll be designated for other crops next season—mainly easier-to-harvest varieties for my mom. I also have 10 shallow beds available.

I know that white potatoes are cheap and we don't necessarily need to grow them, but we want to. As we're expanding our garden to fulfill all our vegetable and fruit needs, the method we choose for potatoes needs to work in a scalable way to produce enough for the whole family for a year. I'm curious to hear what method you'd recommend and your reasons for that choice!

I would suggest going for raised beds. They offer a great balance between good yields and ease of harvest, especially since your clay soil might make things tricky. Buckets are handy for small-scale gardening but aren’t the best if you're looking to expand your potato production down the line.

How would you use the shallow raised beds for potatoes next season? Any tips?
