Strange Buzzing Noise from Above My Microwave – What’s Going On?

Asked By CuriousKitchen29 On

I've been hearing a strange buzzing noise coming from where the power cord of my microwave goes through the bottom of the cupboard. It sounds a bit like a loud buzzing bee or, as my boyfriend jokingly put it, like farting! We tried unplugging it and even turned it off at the breaker, but the noise keeps happening. I also noticed that the gray seal around the cord seems to be sinking into the hole. We are the first owners of this house, and we've dealt with some weird issues before. Any ideas on what could be causing this noise? Could it be something related to pressure, or am I just imagining things? Also, if anyone knows how to upload videos here, I have one that might help!

If your microwave is a combo unit with a hood vent, the buzzing could be due to wind causing the metal vent to vibrate. I've noticed that air pressure can create similar noises, especially in well-sealed houses. However, if this isn't a combo, I’d check for other issues.

I don’t think it is a combo because the microwave has vents that don't connect to any external vent. Seems like I’ll have to dig deeper!

It's best to unplug the microwave immediately and call an electrician in the morning. You might have an electrical issue, and you don’t want to risk a fire or anything dangerous.

You're not alone! My microwave does this too. It sounds pretty bizarre and sometimes I think ants might be getting electrocuted in the walls! ? But seriously, I deal with a similar buzzing noise. It goes away temporarily when I turn it off and back on, but it always comes back. We just unplug it when we're not using it. It might be worth checking if the plug or the microwave itself needs replacing.

I can't tell if you're joking about the ants, but I really hope that's not the case! ? It started making noise only recently after a year of being quiet.
