Do I Need Mesh After Drilling Holes in My Vinyl Soffit for Ventilation?

Hey everyone! I've just discovered that my vinyl soffit covers have no functioning vents behind them, despite being perforated all around. I'm planning to pop them open and use a 4-inch hole saw to cut out vents, but I'm wondering if I should put some sort of mesh over the holes that I drill, or if just covering them back up with the perforated vinyl will be good enough. Any advice would be super helpful! Also, any tips on how to handle attic fiberglass insulation that needs to be pulled back from the soffits would be awesome. Thanks! ?

So, I chose aluminum vents that come with screens already built in. I used a sawzall with a spade drill bit and some small screws. If you live in an area with lots of bugs, having those screens is definitely a good call!

They actually make specific vents designed for this, but honestly, you could use almost anything that fits the need. It's often just standard to have perforated soffits in most homes.

You actually don't need to worry about putting extra mesh over the holes. The perforated vinyl should do the job just fine! I suggest using foam baffles to keep the insulation out of the way before you start drilling. And seriously, don’t forget to wear a mask while working or you might regret it later. Going with 4-inch holes works like a charm!
