Do I Need Both Collar Ties and Rafter Ties for My Playhouse Roof?

I'm building a small kids' playhouse that's 6 feet by 8 feet with 5-foot high walls and a gable roof. Given the size, I'm wondering if I only need collar ties, or if I should also install rafter ties. I know what both types do, but it seems like because the roof is so small and the collar ties are almost doing the job of both, I might not need both. What do you all think? Should I go for both, or is just using collar ties enough? Thanks!

For your playhouse, just using collar ties should be fine. They help keep the rafters from sagging and prevent the walls from bowing outward. The rafter ties, which prevent uplift during strong winds, might be overkill for such a small structure. Unless you're in an area prone to high winds or heavy snow, I wouldn't worry too much about them. If you want to add some extra security, just some collar ties made from plywood placed under the ridge should do the trick!

Thanks for the info! I appreciate the advice, especially about the wind conditions.

Yeah, collar ties should do the job for a playhouse. They’re perfect for preventing the rafters from spreading out, which is really the main concern here. You shouldn’t need rafter ties unless your area has severe weather. Just make sure everything is securely fastened!
