What’s the Best Wood for a School Buddy Bench?

I've been assigned to build a Buddy Bench for a local elementary school, but I'm not sure which type of wood would be best. Here are the important things to consider: it needs to be safe for kids and durable since it'll be heavily used. It also has to withstand the Kentucky weather, require minimal maintenance, and be paintable (so nothing that's not real wood). We're on a budget, so we'd like to avoid expensive options. Plus, it shouldn't get too hot in the sun to prevent burning the kids when they sit on it. Any suggestions for suitable types of wood?

If you're looking to match the school's colors, consider using poly wood. Otherwise, pressure treated lumber is a good option—it’s easily available at places like Home Depot and works well for painting too.

Thanks for the tips! I'll definitely consider pressure treated wood.

You can't go wrong with pressure-treated construction lumber, especially since you plan to paint it. It’s strong enough for benches and fairly affordable, making it a smart choice for your project.

Awesome! I appreciate the advice.

Cedar is a solid choice! It's naturally resistant to weather, so it should hold up well outside. Plus, it’s safe for kids and has a nice finish if you choose to paint it later.
