Hey everyone, I'm looking for some advice on how to mount heavy items like TVs, computer monitors, and shelves onto my walls, which are made of drywall attached to metal studs. I know this isn't the best setup, and I can't drill into those metal studs, so whatever I do has to be mounted directly to the drywall. I've tried Toggler bolts for a monitor arm, but the drywall crumbled and left a mess. Most online advice suggests finding a stud to attach to, but I don't have access to them. Am I missing something obvious here? What can I do?

First off, don’t let anyone tell you that you can't drill into metal studs! You absolutely can, and they’re tougher than they might seem. If you're allowed, consider installing some blocking between your studs or even attaching a sheet of plywood to the wall, then mount whatever you need to that. Use screws specifically for metal studs because they hold up well due to their fine threads. This way, you won’t have to rely on drywall anchors that just crumble under pressure!
You should definitely check with your building management about drilling, but it could save you a lot of hassle.
I recently used heavy-duty toggle bolts from Toggler to install grab bars in my bathroom. They worked like a charm. Just make sure your drywall is in decent condition, otherwise it might just fall apart like you experienced. If the toggle bolts aren't holding, you might want to consider those metal screws and pre-drilling into the studs if you can get clearance!
I had the same problem with my drywall falling apart. I thought toggle bolts were supposed to be bulletproof!
If you need to mount something heavy, definitely consider adding blocking between the metal studs. I’ve even gone as far as removing drywall to add plywood. But I know that isn’t an option in an apartment without permission. Just remember, drywall anchors won’t hold anything heavy, so find a solid way to connect to the studs or blocking if you can!
Yikes! Tearing down walls isn't really a viable option without prior approval in an apartment setting.

That's a solid idea! Mounting wood to the studs and then attaching heavy items to it sounds way more secure.
