What’s the best way to attach a ceiling vent grill to broken drywall?

I've got an issue with my ceiling vent grill where the drywall around it is all crumbly and damaged. The previous owner had it directly screwed into the drywall, and now I can't use a drywall anchor. What are my options to securely attach this vent grill?

You could try patching the drywall first, or for a quick fix, using some 3M double-sided tape from Home Depot might do the trick!

One option is to use an oversized vent grill. This way, it'll cover the damaged area, and unless someone looks closely, they won’t even notice it's not the original size.

Another solid approach is to install L-shaped sheet metal pieces to the inside of the vent boot. This lets you screw into metal instead of crumbly drywall, providing a much more secure hold.
