Need Advice on Building a Motorcycle Ramp for My Truck

Hey folks! I'm looking to build a custom motorcycle ramp to fit my pickup truck. I've got two 2x12 boards, each 6 feet long, and I'm thinking of connecting them somehow for loading the motorcycle. I want it to be easy to detach for storage and transport. My truck is lifted, so I need a longer ramp than what's typically available and I really want to avoid spending over $500 on a commercial ramp. The combined weight of my motorcycle and myself is around 600 pounds, so I need to make sure the ramp and any connections can handle that load. I'm also considering a mortise and tenon joint, but I'm not sure if that's the right choice or what dimensions I should use to ensure it's strong enough. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Honestly, I’d steer clear of building a ramp yourself. It's safer to buy a lightweight aluminum ramp that's specifically rated for the weight you'll be loading. Or, if you’re up for it, consider building a fully framed loading dock with a ramp supported by joists and studs. Those boards might not hold up with that kind of weight, despite being 2x12s!

Surprised to hear that! I’ve seen people use 1x8s, so I thought 2x12s would work better. But I totally get the flexibility of wanting a portable solution!
