I'm working on building a backstop for a shooting range on my property and found that railroad ties could be useful for that purpose. However, I'm not sure how to effectively insert rebar into them so that they stay securely in place. This is my first time doing something like this, so I'm a bit lost and could use some guidance.

To put rebar through the railroad ties, head to your local hardware store and get a long drill bit that can go all the way through the tie. Make sure it's slightly larger than the diameter of the rebar. If your current drill isn't powerful enough to handle it, consider renting one if that's an option.
You might want to think about the potential for ricochets when inserting rebar into the wood for your backstop. It's a valid concern! But as long as your target is at a safe distance from the rebar, you should be fine. If you happen to hit it, it probably won’t cause much of a hazard.
You can find flex bits on Amazon that can be up to 5 feet long. These bits are typically used for running cables and electrical wiring. They come in sizes like 1/2" and 3/4" in diameter, which should work well for your needs.
