How Often Should I Water My New Cactus?

I recently picked up a cactus from a plant store, and it was last watered about three weeks ago. It stands about a foot tall, but I didn't get much info about its specific type. Can anyone share their thoughts on a good watering schedule for my new spiky friend?

For desert cacti, make sure the entire pot is bone dry before watering thoroughly. Letting the excess drain out is key. It's best not to stick to a strict schedule. Also, remember that they prefer loose, sandy soil; dense organic mixes can lead to root rot, even with the right watering.

I have a barrel cactus, and I water it about once a month. I think it's important to identify exactly what type of cactus you have before creating a watering schedule, though!

You’re right! I definitely need to identify it better.

Thanks for the tip! I've been trying to figure out whether it’s a torch cactus or something similar since it seems to be a mix of cuttings.

From my experience, wait until the pot feels light and the soil is really dry before watering. Cacti thrive on drying out between waterings, and they'll need plenty of sunlight too!
