I recently lost my father and promised to take care of his garden. He wanted me to keep maintaining it after he passed away. However, during the last month, I haven't been able to keep up with the garden, and it's been really wet here in Scotland, which has made the weeds go wild on the lawn. I'm looking for any advice on how to manage the weeds before winter really sets in. I'm not sure what to do since I haven't had much experience with gardening. I'd really appreciate any help to honor my dad's wish!

Sorry to hear about your loss! Weeds tend to grow slowly this time of year, so don’t stress too much. It really depends on the types of weeds you've got and how you want to treat them. Keeping the lawn mowed regularly can help keep weeds at bay. I used to use 'Weed and Feed,' but I've learned that there are more natural ways to handle it. Pulling them out by hand can be time-consuming, but it’s a bit therapeutic too. You're doing great by wanting to care for the garden!
My condolences; that’s tough to deal with. Missing a few weeks isn’t the end of your garden. At this time of year, just give it a strim if the weeds are getting too tall. They’ll slow down growth soon, and mowing won’t be a problem when spring rolls around. Personally, I’d avoid weed and feed as the chemicals can harm pollinators.
You might want to get an electric cordless strimmer to chop down the weeds selectively. It's much easier and fun compared to doing it all by hand! Plus, you won't have to deal with mowing the whole lawn just yet.
Thank you all for your helpful replies! I’ll share a picture of the lawn when I can. 🙌
So sorry for your loss. Just a heads up, mowing wet grass can get messy, so be cautious there. Maybe just hand-pull the bigger weeds for now and plan to mow in the spring. You don’t want to overdo it if the weather’s wet. Just take your time; tackling it little by little will help!
I'm really sorry for your loss. You can still tidy up the lawn a bit before winter. If the grass is dry enough, consider mowing it a little shorter than usual to expose the weeds. You can hand-pull the big ones if you can. A slow-release fertilizer could help strengthen the grass, allowing it to outcompete the weeds. Just focus on keeping the lawn healthy for now!
