When Should I Harvest My Potatoes: Wait for Dry Soil or Dig Now?

Hey everyone! I'm a gardener based in Minnesota, and my potatoes are looking ready for harvest. We've had a dry month, but it rained for the last three days. Should I wait for the soil to dry out again before I dig them up, or is it better to pull them now to avoid any risk of rot since it's been wet? I checked the forecast, and it looks like no more rain is coming. Thanks for your help!

If the leaves on your potatoes have dried up fully, it's best to wait until the soil dries a bit more before harvesting. Wet soil can be sticky and makes digging more difficult. Since you've only had three days of rain and the soil is starting to dry out, there’s likely no real risk of rot right now.

Got it! I was mainly worried about the wet soil, but I’ll hold off until it dries a bit.

Honestly, I just leave my potatoes in the ground until freezing temperatures really start to set in. They can usually handle being in there a bit longer.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll keep an eye on the weather.
