How Hard Is It to Operate an Excavator for Digging a Sewage Line?

I'm renovating a house I just bought and need to connect it to the public sewer. Since there's a lot of work to do, I'm considering digging the trench myself to save on labor time for my plumber. I've worked with him on similar projects in the past. I plan to get the required depth and trench location from him. My question is: how challenging is it to operate an excavator for a project like this? I've used tractors with front loaders and other hydraulic attachments before, but this will be my first time for actual excavation. Also, I'm planning to call before I dig to avoid any issues.

If you're just digging a trench, it might be easier to hire a couple of guys with shovels, depending on the depth you need to reach.

I think the trench needs to be about 30 inches deep, and it’s quite a distance from the road, almost 115 feet. That’s a lot of shoveling!
