Tips for Transporting Plywood in Smaller Cars

I built a shelf a few months ago but never added plywood to it, which made it pretty useless. With my tax refund, I picked up some new tools, including a Milwaukee impact driver, drill, and saws. Yesterday, I decided to finally get a piece of plywood, but I ran into an issue with my Honda Pilot. I've managed to fit long 2x4s and 2x6s before, so I thought a 4x8 sheet would work too. However, once I loaded it up along with the other lumber, I realized it was hanging over the driver's side a lot. I tried raising the passenger seat, but it still didn't help, so I thought about snapping the sheet to fit, which didn't work. I almost gave up on it, but then I considered buying a cordless circular saw. When I remembered I didn't have the battery, I decided to use a ratchet strap to secure the plywood in place so it wouldn't be a danger during the drive home. This made me wish I had a truck! Now, I'm thinking of returning my corded saw and investing in a better cordless one instead. Any tips for fitting plywood in smaller vehicles?

I've got a pickup truck, so when I need smaller cuts, I have the store do it for me. Just remember that the cuts might not be perfect, so I usually ask for them a little longer and trim them later at home. That plywood can be heavy and awkward alone!

Great idea to get extra length! It's better to have a bit more than to struggle with fitting it!

You can ask the store to cut the plywood for you! Most places are happy to help with that. I haven't encountered a store that wouldn't accommodate a request to make something fit better in my car.

Before I bought any saws, I asked a big store to cut the lumber down to fit my car, but they didn't do it anymore. I ended up buying a jigsaw to make my own cuts. Once, I thought two 4x4 sheets would fit in my car and had to tie them on top when they didn't. It was tricky holding them down with one hand while driving! Just be careful with wind, or it might feel like you're flying!

Haha, I can't believe you held on like that! You've got guts! I've dealt with roof issues too and learned to tie down better.

Yeah, the orange store can be hit or miss with cuts. Sometimes they’ll do two if you're lucky!

I get it! My old 1999 Audi A4 can fit 8' lumber by sliding it between the front seats. A lot of lumber yards offer delivery service too, and if that's too pricey, I found a budget trailer from Harbor Freight that works great for carrying large sheets or even appliances. Costs around $700 for the setup. Also, big box stores will cut sheets down to size, but just be ready for some inconsistencies in their cuts, so ask for a bit more than you need just in case!

Totally did the trailer thing too! It's super handy for those larger pieces without the hassle.
