I Was Let Go for Being ‘Unapproachable’—How Can I Improve My Social Skills for My Next Job?

Hey everyone! I recently got let go from my job after working there since 2018. My boss said that several clients complained about my body language and tone, saying I seemed 'unapproachable.' I was never informed about this issue until the termination, so it caught me off guard. I know I'm not very social and generally keep small talk to a minimum, but I really tried to do a good job. I'm looking for advice on how to come across as more approachable in my next role. Any tips or experiences would be greatly appreciated!

I used to have the same issue, especially when my focus was on tasks. Occasionally, I came off as short or uncaring. What helped me was realizing that sometimes you have to engage in light conversation, even if you find it tedious. It’s part of being a coworker or having clients; showing that you care about their small talk can make a big difference.

Exactly, showing interest in others, even for a minute, builds rapport and makes everything smoother in the long run.

It’s definitely tough to hear that people find you unapproachable, especially when no one mentioned it before. Have you considered asking your boss for specifics? Getting that feedback could help you understand better how to adjust. Also, asking friends or family could provide insight into how you come across socially overall.

That’s a great idea! It might feel awkward but having detailed feedback might help clarify what behaviors to avoid or work on.

One way to ease the situation is to be upfront with people. For instance, when meeting clients or coworkers for the first time, you could mention something like, 'I tend to focus on my tasks, so if I seem distant, it’s not personal!' This could make them feel more at ease about approaching you.

I do something similar! I let people know that I'm just really focused, and that it takes me a moment to respond. It helps a lot!

Sometimes, it’s about finding the right job that suits your personality. Some jobs require a lot of social interaction, while others are more behind-the-scenes. If being personable isn’t your strong suit, maybe look into roles with less client-facing interaction. You shouldn't have to change who you are to fit a role that demands more social interaction.

I’ve experienced that too! Once I found a role more aligned with my personality, it felt way more comfortable and enjoyable.
