How Can I Make Sure My Furniture is Bed Bug-Free Before Moving In?

I'm about to move in with my fiancée, and we'll be bringing our own furniture — my mattress and bed frame, and her couch. While both of our current homes haven't had any bed bug issues that we know of, we're concerned about bringing any hidden pests into our new clean place. What steps can we take to ensure that my mattress and her couch don't harbor any unwanted guests, especially since we've dealt with some common household bugs in the past?

If you really want to ensure peace of mind, deep clean your area and apply diatomaceous earth along seams and in cracks of your furniture. It’s been a game changer for me! I also suggest getting a good quality cover for your mattress to keep things sealed tight.

You really have to rub it into the seams for it to work effectively.

Yes! And that reminds me – keep an eye out for bites too. They often come in threes, and those brown spots are pretty telling.

When checking your mattress, look for clusters of brown spots or any signs along the seams. Even if you don’t see bugs, those spots might hint at an infestation. If you find anything suspicious, it might be safer to just get a new mattress instead of risking it!

So those brown spots even without visible bugs mean they've already moved in? That's alarming!

Right? Just because you can't see them doesn’t mean they’re not there. Always check thoroughly!

Consider getting a protective cover for your mattress. These covers can help seal in any lingering bugs. For the couch, there are special products that can target specific bugs as well. Online stores have some great options!

Totally agree! The covers can really help prevent bed bugs from making a home in your mattress.

Also, food grade diatomaceous earth is fantastic for treating furniture. I used it in my place and haven’t seen any pests since!

I’m not too sure what you mean by 'ghetto bugs,' but I've had experience with house centipedes before. They can actually help by eating other pests. But seriously, if you're worried about bed bugs, think about heat treatment. Putting items in a sealed bag in direct sunlight for several hours can help kill any hiding bugs. My go-to has been using heat or freezing to deal with them.

I've always called them Larrys. They really keep things in check! But yeah, definitely try out the heat cure.

Just be cautious about how long you expose things to the heat. You want to make sure it’s enough to kill any pests!

You might want to consult an exterminator. A simple consultation can provide you with tailored advice on what to do before moving in!

Great idea! They’ll help walk you through the steps for a pest-free transition.

Also, you can borrow a pest control heater to treat your items to be extra safe before moving. It's worth it!
