Accidentally Cut My Storm Door Lock Spindle Too Short – What Should I Do?

I was replacing the mortise lock and handle on my storm door, but I accidentally cut the lock spindle too short. Now it doesn't reach the handle to engage and open the door. Is there any way to repair this, or do I have to buy an entirely new hardware set?

From what I can see, it looks like you'll need to replace the entire cylinder that’s fixed to the handle. It shouldn't be too complicated; usually, there are just a couple of screws holding it in place.

If it's possible, you might also be able to use the old spindle from the original lock, assuming it’s removable. But be careful—some locks have a spindle that's attached and not meant to come off.

You can actually buy replacement spindles separately! Just measure the length you need or bring the old one to your local hardware store, and they can help you find the right size.
