I accidentally left some rubber dishwashing gloves in my dishwasher, and they partially melted onto the heating element. I managed to clean off most of it with steel wool and ran a cycle with dishes, but the burnt plastic smell is still really strong. I'm wondering how to get rid of this smell. Would running a cycle with vinegar and baking soda help?

Honestly, just running the dishwasher empty with some detergent is a great way to clean it out. Most dishwashers have some abrasive content in their own detergents to help with cleaning. If the smell persists after that, replacing the heating element could be the next step. But let's hope it doesn't come to that!
I’d skip the baking soda and vinegar combo since they neutralize each other. Just run your dishwasher empty a few times with plain water. That should help burn off any remaining residue.
Also, I feel you; I once melted a plastic cup in the microwave, and we had to ditch it!
Thanks! I think I’ll try that first.
I've melted kids' cup parts before, and running the dishwasher empty usually does the trick. It may take some time for the smell to fade, but fresh air helps! Just be patient with it, and it should clear up.
It’s so bad right now, but fingers crossed! Thanks for the reassurance!
When I had a similar problem with a melted bottle lid, I just aired out the kitchen a bit and ran a couple of cycles without dishes. After a few runs, the odor vanished. You could also try putting a cup of vinegar in the top rack while you run a high heat cycle—don't worry about adding baking soda.
This method really worked for me!
Thanks! I’ll give that a shot!

Good advice! Just plain water did wonders for me. But what's your view on running it with vinegar?
