I'm looking to pick a dwarf tree for my tiny north-facing front garden that still gets plenty of light. I'm trying to decide between an acer and a magnolia, and I have sentimental reasons for both, which makes it tough to choose just one. Any thoughts?

Magnolias look stunning when they're in bloom, but they can be a bit lacking the rest of the year. If you're looking for something that keeps its charm longer, I’d suggest going with an acer instead.
Both trees have dwarf varieties that would fit well! If your house is Victorian or older, a magnolia might suit the style better. But for modern homes, I’d vote for the acer. Plus, I found a particular magnolia variety that stays small; just make sure it fits your space!
I'd lean towards the acer! They're really beautiful and have so much variety in colors and forms throughout the seasons. You'll find lots of visual interest all year round with them.
