Advice for First-Time Homeowner on Electrical Upgrades

Hey everyone! My mom and I just bought this old house that hasn't seen much care since the 80s. It's around 180 years old, and during the inspection, they found that while we have modern wiring, there's a bunch of old wiring, outlets, and extension cords left over. The inspector suggested we remove all the old stuff and add safety features like AFCI and GFCI outlets, a grounding rod, and a few new breakers.

Here's the kicker: I'm not living there right now and won't be for about three months, but my mom really wants to get things moving and hire an electrician to install the new breakers and rod right away. I'm thinking it might make more sense to wait until we can tackle everything at once instead of calling someone out twice. What do you all think? Is it wiser to wait or jump in now?

I’m not an electrician, but I’ve owned a few homes over the years and had lots of electrical work done. You can definitely hire someone to do everything at once, but just keep in mind that it may not save you as much as you think. The travel costs for an electrician aren't typically a big part of the total bill, so it could be worth getting everything planned out before you go ahead.

Exactly! If you won't be around while the work is being done, it's a bit risky to take on a big project like that. You’ll want someone who can stick to their schedule, finish on time, and stay within budget. Breaking the project down could make everything run more smoothly.

You should definitely bring in a few electricians for estimates and opinions. Keep in mind that your mom will need permits too! Make sure to ask about those costs when you get your estimates so there are no surprises later.
