Advice for Growing Indoor Herbs: What Works Best?

Hey everyone! I've noticed I spend a lot on common herbs that I use only a couple of times before they end up in the trash. I'm thinking of growing my own herbs indoors, specifically cilantro, thyme, rosemary, basil, and ginger. Can these all be planted together, or should I stick to individual pots? Also, what kind of lighting setup would you recommend? Is it possible to use scraps or leftovers from the store to grow these herbs? Any advice would be super helpful!

You’ll want to keep ginger separate because it’s a different plant altogether. It’s possible to grow all your herbs together, but I recommend giving each some space since they can get unruly. I keep mine on a sunny windowsill and use grow lights when it’s cloudy. Just be careful with pests; they can be a big problem when growing indoors. Regular pruning is super important too, especially with cilantro—you’ll want to avoid it 'bolting' as that can ruin the flavor. Keeping your herbs in a happy environment pays off!

Did you find pests coming from the potting soil you used? I’ve had issues before. My space doesn’t get much light, so I’m investing in grow lights to help.

Yeah! Bugs can show up surprisingly quick. Just keep an eye on them and monitor any signs early on.

From my experience, it's better to grow these herbs in separate pots rather than all in one bed. Basil and cilantro grow quickly, and having them in their own pots keeps them from getting too wild. Plus, it’s easier to rearrange them later on! As for the cilantro, it really depends on how it's sold—either as cut leaves or whole plants. If it's cut, you might need to try rooting it in water first before transferring it to soil.
