Hey everyone! I just moved into a new house and I'm excited to turn the garage into a woodworking shop. As a beginner, I'm looking for some advice on a couple of things. First, what types of wood would you recommend for small beginner projects? I'd appreciate any links or pictures for ideas, especially for making my own jigs. Secondly, what tools should I invest in first? I already have a table saw, miter saw, various drills, a circular saw, jig saw, palm sander, air compressor, and some measuring tools. Since I work at a guitar manufacturing company, I'd also love suggestions on tools that would help in making instruments. Thanks a lot!

When diving into woodworking, it’s essential to pick projects based on what you need or want. For example, if you need a cutting board or a small shelf, start with those. The project will guide your tool choices. Try to stick with local hardwoods that won't break the bank—like walnut, which might be cheap in some areas but pricey in others! Just remember that your local availability and budget will largely determine your wood options.
For budget-friendly options, pine is your best friend! If that's still tight, you can go for cedar fence pickets—they work great for fun projects even if they warp a bit. As for tools, depending on whether you're into power tools or hand tools, I’d suggest starting with basics like a hand plane and chisels. Find a project you like, maybe a simple box, and just jump in. You’ll discover what you need as you progress!
So you're at a guitar manufacturing place—do you take home leftovers like scraps? That’s a goldmine for beginner projects! Also, starting a full workshop right away might be a bit much. I suggest starting small with a basic workspace. I built my first bench with 2x4s, which was great for assembly but not sturdy enough for hand planing. Just make some simple projects, work on your skills, and as you go, you'll figure out what tools you actually need.
Thanks for the tips! I'll definitely follow your advice and keep it simple at first.

That makes sense! I'm glad you mentioned starting small. I think a bench is a good first project.
