Hey everyone! I'm about to start building some nightstands and I have a few questions regarding the drawers:
1. I've noticed that most people use 1/4" plywood for drawer bottoms set in a dado groove. Could I just screw in some 1/2" plywood instead? Will that work?
2. I want to try using undermount drawer slides, but I've seen videos that make it look tough. Is it really complicated, or can a beginner like me handle it?
3. I'm planning one drawer to be roughly 32" long, 18" wide, and 7" high. Do I need to reinforce the bottom in the center? Will it be too heavy to slide around easily?
4. I think a toe kick is necessary so the base of the nightstand doesn't sit flat on the floor. Is 2" enough height for that?

1. The standard 1/4" plywood is usually strong enough for most applications, plus using a thicker board can make the drawer a bit heavier and less pleasant to use. Setting it in a groove keeps it hidden when the drawer is open. While you could use 1/2" plywood, just be aware it may not look as clean.
2. Honestly, I find undermount slides easier than side-mounted ones because they allow for better adjustability if your drawer isn't perfectly sized. They can be pricier, but the ease of install can be worth it.
3. For your drawer size, you'll be fine as long as you're using quality sliders.
4. A toe kick does two main things: it prevents the drawer from scraping against the floor and allows for a better opening if there’s stuff in the way. 2" should be good, but think about if you want more room for any potential stuff on the floor. Plus, it helps with aesthetics!
