Advice Needed for Installing a Gas Hot Water Tank

Hey everyone! I'm a first-time homeowner, and the gas water tank that came with my house just broke down. I'm wondering if I can buy a new unit myself and have an HVAC technician install it, or is it necessary for the HVAC company to purchase and install it? I'm a bit confused about how this all works. Any advice on the best approach would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Absolutely, you can buy the water heater yourself! Some folks say that the models from plumbing suppliers are often better than the ones from big box stores, even if they have the same model number, but I can't confirm that. Personally, I got my gas heater from Home Depot, installed it myself 14 years ago, and it’s still going strong. Just keep in mind that HVAC isn’t the right route for installation; you’ll want to hire a plumber. Many plumbers might not install a water heater you bought yourself due to liability, so be sure to check that first.

If you’re looking to save some cash, a handyman could help you with the installation. I know it involves gas which raises some safety concerns, but generally, it’s not too tough of a job. Just make sure to get someone reliable!
